Confidence that's earned
Confidence here is a rep they could not do last month and can do now. Parents in Pakuranga notice it off the mat as a child who speaks up and stays with a hard task.
Kids BJJ Pakuranga starts at age 4 and runs through to 15. The classes are at Botany Town Centre, a short drive for families in Pakuranga, Highland Park, Farm Cove and Half Moon Bay. Black belt coaches have been teaching Auckland children since 2006, and the first class is free.
Parents around Pakuranga looking at kids martial arts usually want two outcomes: a child who is calmer under pressure, and self defence that gets them free and away without a punch or a kick. Jiu-jitsu is grappling. A smaller child learns to use leverage, so size matters less than the move they have practised.
Confidence here is a rep they could not do last month and can do now. Parents in Pakuranga notice it off the mat as a child who speaks up and stays with a hard task.
The first tool is a clear voice. If someone grabs them, they practise getting free and creating space, with no striking. That is the self-defence we teach in the kids groups.
A class is a short explanation, a partner drill, then another go. Children who fidget through a long talk often settle once their body is part of the lesson.
Being pinned on a soft mat is uncomfortable and still safe. Learning to breathe and choose the next move is the skill they take into a busy school week.
Balance, coordination and strength come from games and partner drills, so the hour feels like play and still counts as training.
Every child has a partner. They take turns, tap when a hold is tight, and reset. Looking after the person opposite them is part of the class.
Your child is on the mat with black belts, not a rotating junior instructor. Paulo Oliveira, Spiro Kovac and Bruno Maciel coach the Pakuranga kids who train with us.
President of the Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation New Zealand.
Paulo founded Sorriso BJJ in 2006 and is co-founder of Sorriso BJJ Botany and head coach of the whole Sorriso team.
2025 SJJIF World Champion, 2026 World SJJIF 2 x Silver Medallist and 2026 New Zealand Gi Champion.
Spiro coaches on the same mats the children use, and his competition record is what steady training can look like later.
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand's best kids coaches.
Bruno leads the kids program. He keeps a room of young children moving and still teaches a real technique each class.
A four-year-old and a fourteen-year-old should not share a class. Each group trains with children at a similar stage, and the coach can move a child after the trial if another group fits better.
First steps on the mat, through play.
Little Cubs, ages 4 to 6, learn to roll, fall safely and find their balance, then a few simple holds and escapes. Games stay short. The class also practises lining up, waiting and listening to a coach.
They'll learn
Games become techniques.
Cubs, ages 7 to 8, start joining moves: keep a position, escape from underneath, stand back up. Self-defence at this age is a strong voice, breaking a grip and moving away. Stripes give them a goal they can see.
They'll learn
Real jiu-jitsu, with real thinking.
Little Lions, ages 9 to 12, learn submissions, sweeps and guard, then supervised sparring when the coach says they are ready. Competition is optional and is only offered from this group upward. Many children train for years and never enter a tournament.
They'll learn
Teen training with adult-level detail.
Lions, ages 13 to 15, train closer to the adult standard: longer rounds, more detail, and conditioning that sits alongside school sport. It is the step before adult classes, which start at 15.

If you are comparing kids martial arts in Pakuranga, the difference is simple. Team sports are seasonal and often leave children waiting. Striking arts use punches and kicks. Jiu-jitsu gives every child a partner for the whole class, and a way to stay safe without hitting anyone.

Pakuranga kids classes follow the same order each visit, so a new child knows what happens next. After-school sessions start from 4pm, Monday to Thursday, and there are Saturday morning kids classes. Start times sit in the age groups above. The full week, including adult BJJ, is on the timetable.
We don't build fighters. We build kids who don't need to fight.
Pakuranga parents usually ask about safety first. There is no punching or kicking. Partners are matched by age, size and experience. Sparring starts only when the coach decides a child is ready, and tapping is taught in the first class. Boys and girls train together. You can watch.

Taught from day one. When a partner taps, everyone stops.

2006Twenty years of teaching Auckland kids. Sorriso BJJ has been doing this since 2006.
Kids follow the international youth belt system: white, then grey, yellow, orange and green. Each colour after white has three belts: one with a white stripe, a solid one and one with a black stripe. That makes thirteen belts between a child's first class and the adult blue belt at 16.
Stripes are awarded in class for attendance, technique and attitude, so your child always has a goal only a few weeks away. Belts are awarded at gradings where coaches look at skill, effort and how they treat their training partners.
A belt should say exactly what a child can do. Under the rules of the Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF), a child spends at least eight months at each belt before moving to the next, and the federation verifies every promotion with the child's coach. That keeps the belt meaningful and protects the lineage behind it.

We take kids from age 4 up to age 15, in four age groups: Little Cubs (4 to 6), Cubs (7 to 8), Little Lions (9 to 12) and Lions (13 to 15). Age groups are a guide. After the trial, the coach will place your child where they'll learn best.
Children learn to set boundaries with their voice first, then how to get free and get away if someone grabs them. There are no strikes, so the skill de-escalates instead of hurting. Kids prove they are capable every class, by escaping a hold they couldn't escape last week. A child who knows they can handle themselves has less reason to prove it.
Yes, and they often gain the most. There's no ball to drop and no team to let down. Progress is personal, and quiet kids tend to open up once they realise they can do it. Many parents tell us short instructions, physical repetition and an instant reward for paying attention suit active minds. Let the coach know before the first class so they can set your child up well.
Book online and we confirm the class by call, text or email. Arrive ten minutes early. We lend a gi, introduce the coach, and your child joins the group. There is no sign-up speech at the end. Comfortable sports clothes and a water bottle are enough. The free trial page has the rest.
Two classes a week is the usual pace. One class a week still works for a full family calendar, and every group can add Saturday. Start times are in the age groups, and the week is on the timetable.
Pick the age group, bring your child, and stay for the class. Ask the coach whatever you still want to know afterwards. Membership is a decision for later, not for the car park.
